Student visa (Subclass 500)

The Student Visa (Subclass 500) allows you to remain in Australia for up to 5 years for the purpose of full-time study in line with your enrolment. Primary school children starting their enrolment in years 1-4 will generally only be granted a Student visa for a maximum period of 3 years.  

With this visa you can

  • participate in an eligible course of study in Australia
  • travel in and out of Australia
  • work up to 48 hours a fortnight when your course of study or training is in session (students studying a masters by research or doctoral degree, and their families, have no work limit).

You must:

  • apply online in or outside Australia
  • be enrolled in a course of study in Australia
  • hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), or fall in one of the exemption categories
  • be 6 years or older
  • prove you have a welfare arrangement, if you are under 18

Stay Duration:

This is a temporary visa to study up to 5 years. The type of course and its length will determine the length of stay. Primary school children starting their enrolment in years 1-4 will generally only be granted a Student visa for a maximum period of 3 years.
